Int’l Youth Day: Young People Now Deciding Their Future- Akpobi
…Ofa Hails Oborevwori For Appointing Youths
The Executive Director of Not Too Young to Lead Initiative, Mr Elvis Akpobi, has said young Nigerians are becoming increasingly aware of their status and making deliberate efforts to decide their future.
Akpobi stated this in an interview with DELSU Echo on Friday wherein he commented on the significance of the International Youth Day celebrated on August 12 every year.
He asserted that most Nigerian youths have transcended the level of complaining and blaming others for their conditions, noting that the last general elections demonstrated their conscious determination to take back their country.
“Young people are getting more aware; it is the time of coming out”, declared Akpobi.
“We are tired of complaining and we are tired of people using our resources to develop other countries.
“If you observed from the last election, what we did was to put our destiny in our hands, come out, resist threats and vote for the people we truly wanted.
“Despite the fact that in the long run we didn’t get it, we have proven that power still belongs to the people.”

The youth activist identified the lack of enabling environment as a key limitation to the progress of young people in Nigeria, calling on government at all different levels to make deliberate policies aimed at tackling youth-related challenges.
He said: “We don’t have a good working system, and there is no good youth policy.
“Every government should invest deliberately in young people. Give them education, make good policies for SMEs, give them good roads so that businesses can thrive. With that, crime rate will reduce”.
Similarly, Prince God’stime Ukuanovwe, the candidate of African Democratic Congress for the Ethiope East/Ethiope West federal constituency in the 2023 general elections, urged young Nigerians to get more involved in governance and mark their mark in diverse sectors, including technology, entrepreneurship and creative arts.
“Today, let’s celebrate the incredible young Nigerians who are shaping our future”, he said in a statement to commemorate the day.
“You are the leaders of tomorrow, and your voices matter. Embrace the challenges ahead, get involved in governance, and make your mark in tech, entrepreneurship, and the creative arts. together, let’s build a brighter for Nigeria”.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Henry Ofa, has commended the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for running a youth friendly government.
In a statement obtained by DELSU Echo, Ofa observed that “the calibre of commissioner nominees appointed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori reflects his inclusive leadership and youth-oriented approach to governance”.
According to him: “Governor Oborevwori has given real substance to the issue of youth inclusion. We have a significant number of young people in the incoming cabinet which is a bold step towards fulfilling his promise that young people will form an integral part of his government.
“As the world commemorates the international day of youths, I want to call on other state governors and the federal government to take a cue from what we have in Delta State. Young people should be encouraged to grow, thrive and prosper in their chosen career”.
