DELSU Lecturer, Oziwele Bags Ph.D. in Mass Comm

Mrs Patience Eloho Oziwele, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Delta State University, Abraka, today, successfully defended her doctoral thesis before a panel of internal and external examiners at University of Benin, Benin-City.
Oziwele broke the news to DELSU Echo in a telephone chat shortly after her defence.
“It is like a dream”, she said joyfully.
“The defence would have come earlier, but it was postponed several times.
“Since I came out of the hall, I have been telling people that the defence is still like a dream to me”.
Reacting to the development, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Dr. Harvey Igben, congratulated Oziwele on the remarkable feat.
Igben described Oziwele’s new height as an index of continuous staff development and a boost to the quality of staff in the Department of Mass Communication at DELSU.

He said, “Mrs. Oziwele’s dedication, hard work, and intellectual prowess have culminated in this remarkable achievement, which not only reflects her individual excellence but also adds to the reputation of our department and university as a whole.

DELSU Echo reports that Oziwele’s thesis, titled “Evaluation of Maternal Healthcare Communication Channels in Delta State” was jointly supervised by Prof. Marcel Okhakhu and Dr Comfort Obaje.

The thesis essentially focused on ascertaining the adequacy of communication channels used in spreading maternal healthcare-related information in Delta State and its overall impact on public perception and acceptability of maternal healthcare programmes in the state.
The study adopted a mix of quantitative and qualitative research designs, utilising surveys and key informant interviews to collect data from a study sample drawn from communities across the 25 local government areas of the state.
Oziwele’s study shows that the use of multiple communication channels is effective in influencing participation in maternal healthcare programmes.
The study also offers new insights into the effectiveness of communication channels, ensuring the success of maternal healthcare programmes.
Oziwele, who specialises in development and health communication, obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication from DELSU in 2003, and a Master of Science Degree in Mass Communication from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in 2011.
