Manuel Neuer, Germany’s veteran goalkeeper, has announced his retirement from international football after a storied career spanning 124 appearances since 2009.

The 38-year-old Bayern Munich player, who won the Golden Glove award during Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph, revealed his decision on Instagram.

Neuer expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country and acknowledged the difficulty of his decision, citing his physical well-being and the allure of the 2026 World Cup.

However, he felt it was the right time to conclude his international chapter.

“Today marks the end of my career in the German national football team,” Neuer wrote on Instagram.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I didn’t take this decision lightly. I feel very well physically and, of course, the 2026 World Cup… would also have appealed to me.

“And yet I came to the decision that now is exactly the right time to end my chapter in the national team,” he stated.

The German Football Association (DFB) praised Neuer as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, thanking him for his exceptional achievements, camaraderie, dedication, and inspiration to fans and fellow players worldwide.

Neuer’s retirement follows that of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who also announced his international retirement two days prior.

Neuer will continue to play for Bayern Munich, with whom he has won numerous titles, including 11 Bundesliga, two Champions League, and two Club World Cup trophies.

Bayern begins their league campaign against Wolfsburg on Sunday.
