Peter Obi asks for transparency from NNPCL

The Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, has asked Nigerians to demand clear information from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) about the true state of petrol subsidy payments.

In a statement made on Tuesday, Obi expressed his worries about conflicting reports on subsidy payments. He said these reports have left Nigerians confused about how the company operates.

“Nigerians should insist on transparency in government operations, especially in key agencies like the NNPCL, whose activities seem hidden,” Obi wrote on X, a social media platform.

He pointed out that different reports on subsidy payments have left people in the dark, making it hard to understand what is really happening with NNPCL.

Obi said it is strange that NNPCL, which declared a profit of N3 trillion in 2023, is now claiming it has financial problems and cannot supply fuel.

He blamed the ongoing fuel scarcity, which has caused long queues and hardship for many, on the government’s poor handling of the situation.

“The fuel shortage, long lines, and difficulties faced by people are direct results of the government’s failure,” he said. “The struggles of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery and other smaller refineries to get crude oil, and NNPCL’s search for external operators for its refineries, show the incompetence of this administration.”

Obi stressed that Nigerians deserve more openness from NNPCL in its operations, financial dealings, and future plans.

He reminded the government that the Petroleum Industry Act requires NNPCL to be open and transparent. Nigerians should not allow the government to ignore these laws.

“We demand that the government come clean about these issues,” Obi said. “They need to take responsibility for the mess they have created.”

Obi urged Nigerians to continue seeking the truth and holding the government accountable for its actions.

“We must not stop until we know the full truth and ensure those responsible are held accountable,” he added. “The Nigerian people deserve better.”

Obi’s statement highlights the need for clear and honest communication from the government and NNPCL, urging citizens to be vigilant and demand accountability.
