Student Loan Beneficiaries Lament Delayed Allowance

Recipients of the Federal Government’s student loan program nationwide have voiced their concerns over the postponed payment of the August monthly stipend.

In individual interviews with our correspondent, several students expressed their frustration regarding the payment delays.

Students have the option to apply for an upkeep loan in addition to loans offered by their institutions, which are disbursed directly to those institutions.

Reports indicate that 20,371 students from six higher education institutions received N20,000 each as their stipends for July.

The institutions reported to have received funding include Bayero University in Kano State, Federal University in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, University of Ilorin in Kwara State, University of Benin in Edo State, University of Ibadan in Oyo State, and University of Maiduguri in Borno State.

An anonymous student from BUK expressed concern to our correspondent, stating, “We have not yet received the stipend for August. I’m quite confused, please assist us in reaching out to them. The economic situation is becoming increasingly challenging. In truth, we’re actively seeking their assistance to raise the stipend, as the current amount of N20,000 is insufficient for our needs”

A fellow student from the University of Ibadan, who preferred to remain unnamed, expressed, “Honestly, I was anticipating an update by the end of the month, but we still haven’t received any information from them regarding the issue.”

A University of Benin student expressed, “Honestly, it’s getting quite late.

“NELFUND needs to take action.

“While our school fees are settled, our living expenses are now a higher priority, we urge you to assist us in contacting them.”

In response to this situation, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Director of Corporate Communications at NELFUND, stated that the students are expected to receive the N20,000 stipend within this week.

“It has been approved, and they should receive it this week,” Oluwatuyi confirmed.

In the meantime, the National Association of Nigerian Students has urged the Federal Government to raise the monthly stipend from N20,000 to N40,000.
