NECO Releases 2024 Results, Names Worst Performing State

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results for the 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.

According to Professor Dantani Wushishi, NECO’s Registrar/Chief Executive, a total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the exam, with 1,367,736 actually sitting for it.

Out of those who participated, 828,284 candidates, or 60.55%, achieved five credits including Mathematics and English Language.

Abia State emerged as the top performer, with 83.40% of its candidates meeting the criteria of five credits including the core subjects.

The state also led in overall performance, with 95.84% of candidates securing five credits or more.

In contrast, Katsina State recorded the lowest performance in this category, with only 42% of its candidates attaining five credits and above, including Mathematics and English Language.

Kano followed closely with a performance rate of 44.42%.

The results also highlighted a significant reduction in examination malpractice. This year, 8,437 cases of malpractice were reported, down from 12,030 in 2023.

NECO found that 40 schools across 17 states were involved in mass cheating, with one school in Ekiti State recommended for de-recognition.

Additionally, 21 supervisors faced blacklisting due to poor supervision and other forms of misconduct.

The release of these results underscores improvements in examination integrity and varying levels of academic achievement across the states.
