DELSU Gets 100% NUC Accreditation
The Delta State University has secured full accreditation status from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for all its academic programme run in Abraka, Oleh and all other affiliate campuses.
In a letter signed by the NUC Deputy Director of Programme Accreditation, Arc. S. S. Ikani, the Commission also disclosed that all the 40 academic programmes presented to the NUC in the November/December, 2022 accreditation exercise were granted full accreditation.
According to the NUC, the accredited programmes span through the Faculties of Administration (three programmes), Faculty of Agriculture (two programmes), Faculty of Arts (four programmes), Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (three programmes), Faculty of Education (seventeen programmes), College of Medicine (One programme), Faculty of Sciences (six programmes), and Faculty of the Social Sciences (fourprogrammes).
Earlier in January, the Vice-Chancellor of DELSU, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga had disclosed that the institution successfully presented forty academic programmes for NUC accreditation in the last quarter of 2022.
An elated Egwunyenga, who spoke during the 2022/2023 matriculation ceremony of the institution held at Site 3 of the Campus on January 8, 2023, explained that the commendable feat was attained despite Nigeria’s inclement financial situation that has negatively affected the smooth administration of universities.
The Vice-Chancellor announced that DELSU has outgrown its modest beginning to become a revered citadel of research and higher learning, assuring that his administration will remain relentless in the quest to increase the visibility of the institution in terms of university ranking and infrastructural development.
According to him: “Delta State has distinguished itself as one of the centres of academic excellence and has become an attraction for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
“This has been largely due to its track record of maintaining smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar over the years.
“This administration will continue to take gain strides to place this university in the world map as far as university ranking and infrastructural development are concerned.
“The Alpher/Doger (AD) Scientific Index Ranking for 2023 listed Delta State University (DELSU) as the 27th best university in Nigeria and the 4th best state university in Nigeria.
“It further listed DELSU as the best state university in the South-South and South-East Nigeria…these indices are huge improvements from the previous rankings of DELSU.”
The V-C praised the Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for the giant strides taken in the overall development of DELSU, promising that his administration will continue to prudently manage available resources for the overall development of the University.
Commenting on the 2022/2023 admission exercise, he disclosed that about 10,009 students had already been admitted into the various programmes of the university as of January 12, 2023, adding that the admission process was still n-going.
While congratulating the fresh students, the Professor of Parasitology said 8,646 of the university freshmen were admitted into the regular undergraduate programme out of the whopping 36,016 candidates that applied for admission into university through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He disclosed that some other 315 candidates were admitted into the Continuing Education Programme, 789 were admitted into the New Diploma Programme, 171 were admitted into the Intensive and Part-Time Programme, and 88 candidates were admitted into the Diploma in education Programme.
Egwunyenga charged the new students to refrain from all acts of indiscipline at all times and consciously strive to distinguish themselves from the vagaries and hostilities of the conventional society, stressing that the university takes serous exception to violence, cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing and other actions that constitute a breach of matriculation oath.
“I, therefore, urge every one of you to shun all forms of vices that will jeopardize the successful completion of your studies and the attainment of your life dream.
“Peace is paramount to meaningful academic pursuit and it is on this premise that thus university has wage and will continue to wage a relentless war against the nefarious activities of secret cults on the campuses.
“For the avoidance of doubt, cultism on campus of this university is banned and remains banned. Any student found to belong to any secret cult group will be shown the way out of this university.”
