Landladies, Students Clash Over Rent, Assault

Chaos recently erupted in a popular hostel in Abraka, Delta State (name withheld) following a landlady’s refusal to refund the money paid to her by a potential tenant who reportedly lost interest in her apartment.
The tenant, identified simply as Mr. Sam, had identified some challenges in the apartment after he paid the sum of Three Hundred and Ten Thousand Naira (N310,000) as rent and another Twenty Thousand Naira (N20,000) as caution fee, making him to accuse the landlady simply identified as Mrs. Caroline, of willfully deceiving him to pay for a defective apartment.
Trouble broke out when Sam found out there was no constant public power supply and water in the hostel contrary to what he was promised by the landlady, and his concerns were exacerbated by the ‘harsh’ rules set for tenants in the hostel.
This realisation made him to appeal to the landlady for a refund of his money to enable him furnish a new apartment he rented outside and she refused and gave him a condition instead, which later resulted to an argument.
However, the Landlady gave a condition that Sam must get another willing tenant to occupy the house first before she could refund the money leading to heated arguments between them.
Meanwhile, the landlady of another popular private hostel in Abraka has arrested two of her male tenants over alleged physical and verbal assault.
The landlady alleged that the tenants assaulted her during a mid-night heated argument related to the early closure of the hostel’s main gate.
The victims, who are students at Delta State University, Abraka, were taken into custody for two days.
A tenant who craved anonymity to this medium that the landlady had been treating them badly and bullying them in the hostel. She went further to say that the landlady makes them uncomfortable in the hostel.
While also sharing his awful experience with the landlady, another tenant, “I’ve never met such a person in my life; she body-shames people and bullies her own tenants because she owns the compound…she always wants to be feared by her tenants and imposes immature rules on them”.
