Editorial: The Proposed DELSU Waste Management Scheme
Delta State University disclosed its plan to directly collect, manage
and process its waste products in a globally sustainable way. In a memo signed by
the University’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Maxwell Iwegbue, the initial
capital for the project will be sourced from students via a mandatory N2,000
payment per session.

The said memo explained that “given the massive volumes of garbage generated by students and the broader university community, as well as the costs involved in the disposal…effective management and disposal of these wastes are required in order to maintain a cleaner and more sustainable environment.”
We consider this innovative venture worthwhile given our firm belief that it is the duty of an academic community to care for not only the minds of its students, but also the environment in which they live and work. Waste management is a critical issue that affects not only our campus, but also our local community and the planet as a whole. With increasing concerns about climate change, pollution, and sustainability, it is imperative that we take proactive steps to mitigate our impact on the environment. Our university’s waste management initiative is a crucial and timely response to these challenges.
Arguably, waste management is an essential component of sustainability since it focuses on limiting the negative effects of wastes on the environment and public health. To promote ecologically responsible garbage disposal, universities, as centres of learning and innovation, must play an important role. When garbage in universities is not properly managed, the environment, human health, and public safety may all suffer considerably.

While we encourage students to cooperate with the Prof. Andy Egwunyenga’s administration by fulfilling their financial obligations to the university, we strongly believe that it is also our core responsibility to set the right
agenda and offer guidance on the core areas of priority to the University Management on what a sustainable waste management initiative must take into consideration.
First, the Egwunyenga’s administration must immediately devise a veritable way to promote and implement waste reduction strategies on campus and within the university town. Such strategies may include reducing the use of single-use plastics, promoting recycling and composting, and encouraging responsible consumption habits among students, faculty, and staff. By reducing the amount of waste we generate, we can minimise our contribution to landfills and reduce the environmental footprint of our university.
Second, the University Management must genuinely promote proper waste segregation and disposal practices by providing adequate waste bins for different types of waste, such as recyclables, organic waste, and non-recyclables, and educating the campus community on how to correctly dispose of waste. This will
help prevent cross-contamination and ensure that waste is properly sorted and processed, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or incinerators.
Third, the proposed DELSU waste management initiative must vigorously encourage a culture of sustainability on campus by raising awareness about the environmental impact of waste, organising educational campaigns and workshops, and fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership among the members of our university community. By instilling sustainability values in our students, faculty, and staff, we can create a lasting positive impact on our environment and future generations.
Importantly too, we recommend that the operations of the proposed DELSU waste management initiative should align with the Goal 12 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which focuses on “Responsible Consumption and Production”. By actively managing our waste in a responsible and sustainable manner, we can contribute to global efforts to achieve a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
In all, we are convinced that the university’s waste management initiative is a commendable and necessary step towards addressing the environmental challenges we face. By reducing waste, promoting proper waste segregation and disposal practices, and fostering a culture of sustainability on campus, we can make a meaningful impact on the environment and create a more sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come. As members of the academic community, let us wholeheartedly support the Egwunyenga’s administration and actively participate in this initiative, and together, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable campus environment.
