DELSU DECIDES: Matthias Emerges SUG President-Elect, Adoh, Osho Others Win BIG

Matthias Jimson, a-400 level student of Pharmacy has been declared President-elect of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU).
At the end of the elections held today, the institution’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Maxwell Iwegbue, declared that Matthias emerged unopposed after three other contestants for the apex position were screened out of the race due to their inability to get the minimum required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50 as stipulated by the university’s electoral guidelines.
Other officers who emerged unopposed are Comr. Favour Eshenake (Treasurer), Comr. Nduka Olofu (Director of Sports) and Comr. Efeme Izu (Director of Welfare).
However, Comr. Timi Adoh of Science Laboratory Technology Department apparently stole the shine of the day when she was declared the Vice President-elect having polled a total of 2,102 votes to defeat her rival, Comr. Halleluyah Akarume of Agronomy Department who polled 540 votes.
The winning streak also extended to Comr. Prosper Tachare who polled 1,436 votes to defeat Comr. Oghenero Frank (739 votes) and Ogochukwu Agidy (595 votes) for the Secretary General’s position.
The immediate past Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council in the SUG 29th Assembly, Comr. Joshua Osho also emerged the Director of Finance-elect, having polled a total of 1,525 votes to defeat his closest contenders, Comr. Chimuanya Onwuma (702 votes) and Comr. Destiny Okotie-Eboh (681 votes).

For the office of the Director of Information, Comr. Mine Iweta scored 1,116 votes to defeat Oghenejevwe Peter (928 votes) and Comr. Sample Jack (787 votes), while Comr. Paul Opia was declared the winner for the office of the Director of Socials with 1,272 votes to defeat Sharon Agbonfiror (1,213 votes) and Oghenetega Okoro (308 votes).
DELSU Echo reports that the announcement of the results was greeted by wild jubilation among the students, especially the supporters of candidates who emerged victorious.
In an interview, Iwegbue hailed the students’ peaceful conduct and massive turnout for the electoral exercise, describing the process as credible.
“This is unlike electronic voting where some persons collect login details from business centres and begin to vote on behalf of the students. This election was free and fair”, the Students’ Affairs Dean declared.
He explained that the students whose names were excluded from the voters’ register were yet to complete the payment of their school fees, hence their incomplete registration status.
Another critical member of the electoral committee, Prof. Emman Mordi also hailed the peaceful disposition of the students, saying their non-violent behaviour is worthy of commendation.
