DELSU DECIDES: Students Bemoan Disenfranchisement As Vote Collation Begins

Voting at the ongoing Students’ Union Government, SUG, elections of Delta State students have finally ended.
Accordingly, the sorting, counting and collation of votes by the electoral committee have commenced amid rising hopes among students for a truly representative student union leadership.
The process was earlier greeted by concerns by some students whose names were inadvertently excluded from the voters’ register.
The students queried the exclusion of their names from the voting list despite paying their fees and registering for the session.
“My name did not appear on the voters list and I don’t know why such a thing is happening despite bringing my ID card and school fees breakdown”, complained Kaine Samuel, a 300 level student of Mass communication.
“The Polling Officer said that it is because I haven’t paid my school fees completely.
“This is very bad because the only criteria they gave us was to bring our ID card and school fees breakdown, and after struggling to gather everything necessary document to exercise my franchise, they denied me of my right to vote”.

Also, Crispin Ogochukwu, an aspirant for the position of SUG Secretary General told DELSU Echo that man of the students were “not happy because some students who have left their respective hostels for the sake of exercising their franchise have been disappointed because they aren’t able to cast their vote”.
Reacting to the development, Prof. Maxwel Iwegbue, the institution’s Dean of Students Affairs and Chairman of the Electoral Committee explained that the exclusion of the students’ name from the voters’ list was partly due to their payment of school fees in installment.
“The people whose name appear on the list are those that paid their full school fees once”, Iwegbue said.
He further said that there was nothing that would be done at this point for it is only those whose name appear on the voters register is eligible to cast their vote.
At the time of filing this report, the collation of results was still ongoing and the winners are expected to be announced at the end of the process.
Earlier, DELSU Echo investigation showed that many students who thronged the venue of the election had expressed their confidence in the electoral process, believing that the outcome would reflect their collective will.
