From Disqualification To Victory: Onojaife Makes History At SOSSA Election

Comr. Samuel Onojaife, a-200 level student of Mass Communication at Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) has been declared President-elect of the Social Sciences Students’ Association (SOSSA).
At the end of a keenly contested election, Chairman of the 2023 SOSSA Electoral Committee, Mr Ese Umukoro declared that Onojaife polled an impressive total of 461 votes to defeat his contender, Comr. Emmanuel Olotu, a-300 level student of Economics at DELSU.
With his victory, Onojaife has clinged the double honour of being the first 200 level student to ever contest for the most coveted office in the faculty students’ union and the first ever to win it.
“My aspiration was a product of hope, and with my victory, I want to assure you that this hope has come to stay in SOSSA”, declared an elated Onojaife in his brief victory speech.

In retrospect, the President-elect was earlier disqualified from contesting for the office after the Electoral Committee ruled that his Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) was below the required minimum.
Onojaife had presented a CGPA of 3.45, contrary to the minimum 3.50 that the committee had requested, leading to his disqualification and subsequent presentation of Olotu as unopposed for the office of SOSSA President.
However, the President-elect wrote an appeal letter to the institution’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Maxwell Iwegbue, praying him to upturn his disqualification and reinstate his candidacy.

According to the letter sighted by DELSU Echo, Onojaife pointed out that the SOSSA constitution specifies a minimum CGPA of 2.50 for all of its offices, hence he should not have been disqualified.
The President-elect’s appeal was upheld by the Dean of Students’ Affairs and his name was subsequently included on the ballot, leading to the rescheduling of the election for Thursday as against Wednesday, August 16.
With his victory, Onojaife becomes the third student of Mass Communication ever elected to the office of the SOSSA President which was previously held by Comr. Joshua Erubami in 2015 and Comr. Martins Isaac in 2021.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Committee also declared Comr. Ejiro Edoja as the SOSSA Vice President-elect after polling 424 votes to defeat Comr. Favour Ovwodorume who polled 370 votes.
Similarly, Comr. Success Ephraim emerged the Secretary General-elect with 399 votes against Comr. Orevaoghene Emmanuel who scored 379 votes.
The star contender in the election was Comr. Oghenemarho Ebireri who scored the highest votes of 469 to clinch the office of the Financial Secretary against Chinonye Momah who polled 320 votes.
Comr. Ogheneakporhobo Umukoro also emerged the Director of Sports-elect with 445 votes, after defeating Comr. Ekene Madueke who garnered 332 votes.
Furthermore, some leaders-elect of the association were declared unopposed by the electoral Committee.
They were Comr. Ozioma Nwakalor (Director of Welfare), Comr. Jennifer Nwaiukwu (Director of Socials), Comr. Augusta Mogekwu (Director of Information) and Comr. Vera Uwanta (Chief Librarian).
Commenting on the electoral process earlier, outgoing President of SOSSA, Comr. Victor Chukwuedo commended the students for turning out en masse to exercise their franchise.
“This seems to be the largest since my stay on campus”, Chukwuedo told DELSU Echo.
“The handling of the process by the electoral committee and the involvement of students are all impressive.
“I think we have made significant progress in terms of credibility and organisation”.
Also commenting on the process, the Senator representing Faculty of the Social Sciences at the Students’ Union Government (SUG) level, Comr. Ebuka Onyeuba described the process as “fair, stunning and very credible”.
