INTERVIEW: I’ll Tackle Indiscipline, Environmental Challenges In FSS – Prof. Ogege
Prof. Sam Ogege is an eminent professor of sociology at Delta State University, Abraka. He is a scholar of global repute yet humble in his relations with colleagues and students. Recently, he was overwhelmingly voted for as the Dean of Faculty of the Social Sciences at DELSU.
In this exclusive interview with DELSU Echo team of Harrenta Brown, Kennedy Chibogwu, Favour Onosi and Stephanie Igbriwi, he speaks on why contested for the Deanship position and his agenda for the faculty. Excerpts.
You were recently elected as the Dean of Faculty of the Social Sciences, how does this make you feel?
Very awesome, I was elected at the set time. I am humbled that the people found me worthy to be the Dean. The job could be quite taxing at times, but it is as expected. I have been the Head of Sociology Department previously and I am utilising such experience very well even in this new role.
How long have you been lecturing in DELSU?
I came in as a lecturer in the year 2000; that makes it over 22 years of service now. I joined the services of the university with a first Degree.
What are your reasons for contesting for the position of the Dean of the Faculty?
First, I am qualified for the position by virtue of being a professor. Also, I have been a Head of Department which is the rank before the Deanship position in the administrative sense. I like intervening in human problems, and I felt that a very good way for me to address such problems in the faculty is by becoming the Dean of the faculty.

What are the pressing challenges you would tackle in the Faculty?
I just came in. If you look around this office, you may notice that there are some things that need to be fixed before I will fully settle in. So, I will definitely work on them. Meanwhile, when I assumed office, I realised that the lecture Boards in Mass Communication and Psychology Halls were bad, I have been able to replace the one at Psychology hall and I am working towards replacing the one in Mass Communication Hall. I promise to do my best to ensure that everything is in order; any issue that’s beyond my powers will be taken up to the Central management headed by the Vice Chancellor.
Besides building on the legacy of your predecessors, what’s your agenda for the Faculty?
First, it is a part of my goals to strive towards making the faculty environment cleaner and more conducive for learning because I strongly subscribe to the philosophy that environmental health is part of public health. In terms of students and staff discipline, I have met with all level Coordinators and their Assistants and the various Level Advisers to ensure that whenever there is a class and a lecturer keeps students waiting for over 30 minutes without calling, they should report to me.
Also I will address the issue of indecent dressing, hairstyles, and boys wearing earrings. Personally, I do not accept such in my class. There was a Coordinator I walked out of my office because he was wearing earrings. The idea is not to punish the students, but to correct their failings and I think that is part of the reasons lecturers are here.
I am currently working towards organising a either symposium or an awareness forum to discuss the cultural acceptability of a boy wearing earrings. These are some of the plans I have in the offing, and I hope to achieve them by God’s grace.
What of the female students?
Yes, the girls are not left out. I will not allow girls to wear skimpy dresses, ripped dresses or clothes that expose their body. Generally, l will address the issue of indecent dressing among students in the faculty with the aim of reducing it to the barest minimum.
One of the major Challenges in this faculty is the absence of a befitting canteen for staff and students. What step is your administration taking to address this lapse?
There was a canteen in the faculty; it was when Faculty of Management Sciences relocated from Anwai campus that the school allotted the space that the canteen was situated to the faculty. Hopefully, they will relocate to the faculty of Management Sciences official building soon and I will make sure that a central canteen is made available for Staff and Students.
In the past years, FSS was notable for organising Conferences, Symposia and other academic events, but this practice seems to be fading away. How do you intend to remedy it?
Well, I feel it is as a result of the existing cost of things and financial constraints that have discouraged the faculty from organising such events. I promise to look into how we can organise a conference where we can discuss topical issues ravaging the faculty and the school at large for inter-departmental debates.
Does your administration have any form of incentives to motivate Students?
The centre, that is the school management, has mandated us to send names of the best graduating students and best students in other levels. For the faculty, I think it can be replicated. For the staff, there was a time when we organised an award for the staff, but all these require money and the current economic reality may not give room for all that. The idea is there, but we need money to execute them. Even the central university management is equally saddled with so many responsibilities and also suffering from this financial constraints.
What are your final words for the faculty and the University Community generally?
The students should be well behaved and disciplined; they should know why they are here, Lecturers also should treat the students like human beings for we are here because of the students, without the students, we would not have been engaged as lecturers in the first place.
