Egwunyenga Gets Highest SUG Honour, Pledges Greater Support For Unionism

The leadership of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), has conferred the rare status of “Grand Patron” on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga.
The honour was bestowed on Egwunyenga at a brief ceremony held in the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room at Site 2 of the Abraka Campus.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Rosemary Okoh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Ochuko Onomohanran, and members of the SUG 29th Assembly.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor thanked the student union leaders for the honour and commended them for the tact and diplomacy they brought to bear during their administration.

Egwunyenga, who is a renowned unionist, underscored the importance of student unionism in tertiary institutions, assuring that his administration will continue to provide the needed environment that encourages the grooming of future leaders.
He recalled with nostalgia the good memories of working with the outgoing union leaders, saying that the end of their reign as student leaders would not change the already established amicable relationship between them and the university management.
“The world is now a global village; so, wherever you may be, we will keep interacting and relating”, he said.

Commenting on some of the requests made by the student union leaders, the V-C promised that the university management would consider getting a new official vehicle for the union to replace the current one procured some years ago.
Earlier, the SUG President at DELSU, Comr. Caleb Okupa explained that the conferment of the rare honour on the V-C was premised on his admirable leadership style that places a high premium on effective management-student relationships.

Okupa said the SUG under his watch enjoyed immeasurable support from the university management, describing Egwunyenga as a loving father and administrator of repute.
The SUG President also appealed to the university management to consider constructing more units of student hostels to mitigate the rising cost of accommodation in the university town.
