MDCN Inducts 40 Doctors At DELSU, Begs Them Not To ‘Japa’

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has inducted 40 medical doctors who recently completed their training at the medical school of Delta State University, Abraka.
At the oath taking/swearing-in ceremony held at the University’s Abraka campus on Monday, the Registrar of MDCN, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, appealed to the inductees to resist the lure of relocating abroad in search of greener pastures.
Sanusi disclosed that experience has shown that many young professionals who abandon their countries for greener pastures have met unexpected disappointments, noting that Nigeria is in greater need of qualified doctors than the foreign countries.
“If your lecturers had ‘japad’ (relocated from Nigeria) who would have taught you? How about your parents, your families?”, the MDCN Secretary rhetorically asked the inductees.

While administering the oath to the new doctors, Sanusi warned them against all variations of unethical conducts and urged them to continuously prioritise the love for humanity over pecuniary interest.
He also advised the inductees against avoidable industrial actions such as strike, urging them to shun every unprofessional act that could breach the dictates of their professional oath.
He said: “Do not think you can do anything and get away with it. You are under the radar of the public.
“No patient will allow himself or herself to be attended to by a doctor who just came out of jail or who has criminal tendencies.”
On his part, the Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, congratulated the inductees and urged them to remain worthy ambassadors of the university.
“You will be going out to do exploits; the burden of transforming the health sector is placed on your shoulders, despite being very young doctors”, said Egwunyenga.

The Vice Chancellor commended the state government and the University Senate for continuously supporting the medical school at DELSU, declaring that the current positive indices suggest that DELSU has come of age in spite of the myriad challenges facing Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Provost of the College of Health Services at DELSU, Prof. Emmanuel Odokuma said that the university now boasts state-of-the-art facilities courtesy of the generous support of the state government under former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who played a pivotal role in enhancing the Medical School, especially by facilitating the recruitment of more than 50 specialists.
