Only Military Intervention Can Restore Order In Niger- DELSU Don

Published

on

By Joshua Erubami

A renowned political historian at Delta State University, (DELSU), Abraka, Prof. Emmanuel Mordi has said there is no viable alternative to military intervention in the ongoing efforts to restore civilian rule in Niger.

Mordi opined that the various diplomatic measures already being explored by key stakeholders may not yield the desired results, noting that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must act decisively to end military usurpation of power in the francophone country.

The university don made the statement in an interview with DELSU Echo at Abraka, Delta State where he assessed the various diplomatic and military options being considered for the quashing of the Colonel-Major Amodou Abdramane-led military junta.

“You don’t negotiate with bandits; rebellion is always crushed”, insisted the professor of History and International Studies.

“Military rule everywhere is an aberration and should be condemned by all.

“In the democratic system we are now finding ourselves in Africa, the worst civilian regime is better than the best military regime you can imagine.

“So, if soldiers are there then there should be a way of flushing them out.

“We should not wait for the Europeans or western powers to intervene or solve the problem for us, let ECOWAS move in and do it.”

Although many observers have expressed concerns that the use of force in Niger by ECOWAS portends unimaginable refugee crisis for Nigeria, ECOWAS and the Sahel region, Mordi, who is a fellow of the London-based Society of Army Research, asserted that military intervention by the West African power bloc “is the only option”.

He said “there will always be refugees, but it should not take much time to flush out the impostors”.

Recall that members of the Niger presidential guard led by Abdramane had announced they carried out a coup against Niger’s civilian government and ordered the closure of all West African borders.

Abdramane had claimed that the coup was necessitated by continuous deterioration of the security situation and the bad state of social and economic indices of Niger.

DELSU Echo reports that there have been immense pressure on ECOWAS to stem the growing tides of military coup against democratically elected governments in the region.

Since 2020, there have been successful coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and recently Niger after soldiers forcefully deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.

The development has placed the President Bola Tinubu-led ECOWAS on a dicey footing as it toggles between war and diplomacy in the resolution of the crisis.

Last week, Tinubu dispatched some high-powered delegations on foreign missions with the hope of resolving the crisis through diplomacy.

On Friday, the ECOWAS Security Committee comprising African security chiefs met in Abuja where it reconsidered the use of force on the Niger coup plotters.

How ECOWAS handles the issue would ultimately determine its assumed powers in the region which many see as a mere myth.

People outside Niger Republic cannot understand the effects and possible trauma the citizens have gone through.
The coup isn’t hurting the citizens of Niger; matter of fact, they are happy for the new dispensation of power.
So why are other countries trying so hard to intervene in a situation that does not require intervention?
Their own version of Democracy has not favored them at all, so we (meaning ECOWAS) need to let them be.

Matter of fact, ‘cou’p’ is what is needed at this point in time in Nigeria. What is the major cause of the military take over of power in the Niger area?? Mismanagement of public funds, security issue and so on, same with what is experienced in Nigeria today. And thinking of impeaching them won’t be easy, whom are they going to use? Same military. I would suggest they go with negotiation.

We just need peace, and the earlier the better for Africa because we might be giving ourselves or making our continent vulnerable to western rulers if we fail to conduct our affairs properly .

    My opinion tho.

Hmmmm….speaking of peace…we have to be united, rather than divided to seek peace in Nigeria….The government should first consider the citizens safety before considering their hunger for power…. Conclusions on trivial matters like should be made on the interest of all.

If the intervention of the military can restore Niger then so be it.
A bird at hand ,worth a million in the bush. Some of these African countries do not understand the privilege that comes with democracy. So after the seizure of free will that come with military intervention regime, the citizen and the power bodies will buckle down. We shouldn’t overlook the advantage that comes will military reign though.

There are more to these coups in Africa, I think it’s an avenue for cutting ties with colonialism, and if I’m right, then there may be stronger powers behind the scene, which makes military intervention a sweeter option as it is in Ukraine.

They citizen has had their fill with democracy. Let them turn to what they feel will favour them.
Military government might have its disadvantage but let’s not ignore the fact that they are some advantages to it.
This is exactly what we might need in most of these African countries. Some soldiers to knock senses into everyone
