Low Students’ Turnout Threatens SOSSA Congress

Published

The Social Science Students’ Association (SOSSA) at Delta State University, Abraka, Friday, held its sessional congress with less than 100 students in attendance.

The congress, which held at the Faculty of Social Sciences Large Lecture Theatre (FSSLLT), was organised to apprise members of the association on the activities of the Comr. Victor Chukwuedo-led Executive Council.

The SOSSA constitution mandates that towards the end of every academic session, a congress of the association’s members should be organised to enable members scrutinise the administration and projects carried out by the leadership of the Association.

The SOSSA constitution provides that where a congress is attended by less than two-third number of students in the faculty, the congress should automatically be adjourned.

At the commencement of the congress, Comr. Emanuel Oghenechoja, the President of the Nigerian Economics Students Association (NESA) moved a motion against the commencement of the congress on the ground of its poor attendance by members.

Oghenechoja specifically faulted the Director of Information, Comr. Kennedy Chibogwu for not sufficiently disseminating the information on the congress to SOSSA members.

In his response however, the President of National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS), Comr. Julius Kayoda disagreed that it was the duty of the Director of Information to mobilise students in various departments, insisting that such was the responsibility of the Departmental Presidents.

“The duty of the Faculty Director of Information is to pass information across to SOSSAITES in the Faculty Whatsapp group and through the various Departmental Director of Information”, Kayoda argued.

“I saw several memos about this congress, the Faculty Director of Information cannot be blamed for the low turnout.

“All the departmental heads have the responsibility to mobilise students from their departments”.

Also, the Director of Information, Psychology Department, said the faculty Director of Information posted the memo several times in the Whatsapp group for all Departmental Directors of Information and in the Faculty Whatsapp group.

At the end of the debates, the members resolved that the congress should hold as scheduled.

The President of SOSSA, Comr. Victor Chukwuedo enumerated the projects executed by his administration to include the renovation and electrification of the Faculty seat-out situated beside the FSSLLT.

DELSU Echo recalls that the said students’ seat-out was earlier occupied by a food vendor who was alleged to have illegally assumed ownership of the facility until the institution’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Maxwell Iwegbue ordered her immediate eviction.

I think there should be a group platform that constantly informs and remind them on their meeting days

I feel the timing isn’t right. Saturday is a lecture free day where students will be at home attending to one thing or the other based on the fact that it’s weekend and it affords them the opportunity to do one or two things they couldn’t do during the week because of their tight lecture schedule. And then paying transport all the way down just because of the congress in this season of high cost of transportation and this unfriendly economy. Many will not want to. Personally, I feel it should be during the week and not on a weekend. My thoughts though.

I feel the congress should do more for the students rather than look for who to lay blames on. This can help fight the political apathy that has eaten deep into every system. My thoughts though

A congress shouldn’t be an event at the spur of the moment, but a well planned gathering.

Although the meeting was planned well actually.. and most students were not in school for a normal class too… All these things weren’t looked into… It’s actually very bad though… You don’t just fix a meeting without to preparing it..
