Jimson-Led SUG Takes Oath Of Office, Vows To End Arbitrary Levies

Newly elected executive and legislative members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) have been inaugurated to pilot the affairs of the university for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The union leaders were inaugurated today in a ceremony presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Rosemary Okoh, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the new leaders on their electoral victory and wished them a successful administration.
He commended the outgoing leaders of the union for the remarkable achievements made by their administration, advising the newly inaugurated SUG leaders to emulate the worthy achievements of their predecessors.

In his inaugural speech, the newly sworn-in SUG President, Comr. Matthias Jimson said that his administration will tackle the myriad challenges facing students of DELSU, promising that his government will not slam arbitrary levies on students for any items as obtainable in the past.
Jimson also declared that his government will explore all windows to maintain working relationships with the university management in furtherance of the students’ interest and the overall growth of the university.
“In clear terms, the union under my administration will not task any student to pay for materials and/or any other item as obtainable in the past”, he told the cheering audience.
The union leader asserted that students are critical stakeholders in the advancement of the university, calling for a more inclusive synergy between the union and university management to address the myriad issues facing students of DELSU.

He noted that his administration will vigorously pursue adequate consultation and consolidation in its bid to improve the lot of students, assuring that his actions will neither be motivated by fear nor intimidation.
He said: “In the continuity to ensure that we address the sundry challenges, we shall make recourse to the three Cs of ‘Aluta’.
“However, we are confident that with the characteristic cooperation of the Prof. Egwunyenga-led administration, we will achieve results with the first two Cs of consultation and consolidation on any contentious issue.

“All the same, where we inevitably think that the last C, of confrontation, becomes necessary, we shall not be afraid to apply it responsibly.
“We will never negotiate or dialogue out of fear and intimidation but ensure that the principle of collective bargaining is upheld in every negotiation and dialogue.”
Jimson disclosed his administration’s plans to reintroduce the Judicial arm of the union for the purpose of running a complete administrative structure of the union as obtainable in other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Some students who spoke with DELSU Echo, including the immediate past SUG President, Comr. Caleb Okupa, former Senator Representing the Faculty of Education, Comr. Precious Obah and current SUG Treasurer, Comr. Favour Eshenake expressed their confidence in the Jimson-led administration.
The honour was bestowed on Egwunyenga at a brief ceremony held in the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room at Site 2 of the Abraka Campus.
