NLC Confirms Ajaero’s Arrest, Threatens Showdown
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the arrest of its President, Joe Ajaero, by security operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Ajaero was reportedly whisked away without a warrant, and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
The NLC has described the arrest as “an unmistakable demonstration of the height of lawlessness being perpetuated by the Nigerian government and its agencies” and has threatened to take action.
The Congress has put all its affiliates, state councils, and civil society allies on high alert and has demanded Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release.
Ajaero was on his way to the United Kingdom to attend a global gathering of workers when he was arrested.
The NLC has stated that his detention is “a brazen act of intimidation and completely unjustified under the laws of our nation.”
The Congress has also called on the international community, human rights organizations, and all advocates of democracy to take note of the rising wave of authoritarianism in Nigeria.
The NLC remains resolute in its commitment to protecting workers’ rights and will not be cowed by the oppressive tactics of the state.
