‘You’re Failing To Live By Your Standards’, NLC Tackles Tinubu

The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Tuesday, accused President Bola Tinubu of woefully failing to live by the standards it has set for others in its economy recovery efforts.

The NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero in a statement said Tinubu’s Monday nationwide broadcast on working with organised labour to review the country’s national minimum wage did not align with recent happenings that greeted the sudden removal of fuel subsidy.

Ajaero’s statement titled “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Speech not the Silver Bullet that Nigerians expected” was in reaction to Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast on the country’s festering economic challenges.

The organised labour leader expressed worry that while Tinubu in his speech lavishly praised the Private Sector for quickly dispensing wage award to their employees, the Federal Government has failed to do the same for public workers in its employment.

“This is a clear case of failing woefully to live up to the standards it has set for others to meet,” he said.

He asserted that the Federal Government has not matched its public promises with firm commitment to negotiate in good faith with the labour union, adding that the government has been evasive in its negotiation with the union.

The NLC President said, “In all the meetings scheduled by the government, Organised Labour has been forced to negotiate with empty chairs on the Federal Government’s side.

“As a matter of fact, the sub-committee on wage award has not been inaugurated and has not met.”

According to the President, the government’s claims of interventions in the critical sectors of the economy remain mere promises, noting that Nigerians are used to such promises which have never produced any meaningful changes in their lives.
