BREAKING: Abraka Police Allegedly Assault, Arrest DELSU SUG President, Others… Open Gunfire At Students

Police operatives attached to the Abraka Police Division have reportedly arrested the President of the Students Union Government at Delta State University, Abraka, Comr. Augustine Onovughegor.

DELSU Echo learnt that Onovughegor was arrested a short while ago after being allegedly brutalised by the policemen who also reportedly released gunfire and tear gas at students in a bid to disperse them.

An eyewitness told this medium that trouble started when the SUG President attempted to secure the release of some students who were earlier arrested and detained by the police for yet-to-be-disclosed offenses.

Onovughegor who was said to be returning from a function had called by the police station to intervene in the matter and secure the release of his colleagues in his capacity as SUG President.

However, the security operatives had reportedly denied Onovughegor’s request, prompting him to barricade the Police Station.

Miffed by his action, the Police reportedly moved to end his protest, physically assaulting and arresting him and his colleagues in the process.

The witness said: “The SUG President was driving by in the Aluta Jet with some Executives when he saw that they (the police) detained some students.

“As the President of the Students’ Union Government, he wanted to intervene but I don’t know what happened when he went inside the counter but it seems they didn’t listen to him.

“So when he came out, he used the Aluta Jet to block the road; as he blocked the road, they (the police) came out and started beating him and the Executives with him and arrested them. They even opened fire at us, and sprayed teargas on three people’s face. Even now, they are pursuing us with teargas and cane.

“One of the policemen said we should go home before we make our parents regret sending us to school.”

DELSU Echo learnt that the university’s Dean of students’ affairs, Prof. Ignatius Njoseh, is currently at the police station in a bid to secure the release of the arrested students and quell the looming uproar.

At the time of filing this report, students were seen gathering around the Police station and chanting aluta songs.
