DELSU Now In Enviable Position Among Varsities, Says V-C
…..Matriculates 13,882 Freshmen Amid Excitement

The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga has disclosed that the state-owned tertiary institution has attained significant recognition at the local and international levels.
Egwunyenga said the feat was recorded through the combined relentless efforts of the university management under his watch and the commitment of staff and students to repositioning the university.
The Vice-Chancellor made the state at the 2023/2024 matriculation ceremony of the university held in Abraka on Saturday, January 20, 2024.
DELSU Echo reports that the newly admitted students attended the matriculation ceremony in their numbers, and looked joyful as they took the matriculation oath and promised to abide by the rules of the institution.
Egwunyenga, who has been leading the university since December 2019, said the 13,882 matriculating students represented the privileged few who scaled through the rigorous admission screening process of the institution.
He revealed that Nine Thousand and Fifteen students were admitted into the undergraduate-regular programme of the university, while about Four thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Seven others were admitted into other programmes.
According to him, the increasing number of students in the university is traceable to the rising fortune of the institution in the comity of universities within and outside Nigeria.
“Delta State University is one of the fourth-generation universities in Nigeria that was established in 1992.
It has proven its mettle in the pursuit of its primary objectives. It has distinguished itself by the enviable position it occupies in the comity of Universities in Nigeria and the world over, as evidenced by the Alpher/Doger (AD) Scientific Index Ranking for 2023, the Webometric 2023 Global Ranking of Universities and the Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa Universities Rankings.
“The moment, all eighty-three (83) programmes in the university have full NUC (National Universities Commission) accreditation status.”
Prof. Egwunyenga was also expressive on the recent heights attained by the university in the areas of programme accreditation and increment of admission quota.
Most recently, approval was sought and obtained from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to raise the University’s admission quota for the Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme from 75 to 120. In a similar manner, Nursing Science admission quota was raised from 70 to 120.
“The University obtained approval from the NUC for the commencement for some new degree-awarding programmes among others; Medical Laboratory Science, Doctor of Pharmacy, Agricultural Business, and Biotechnology.
The University also secured approval from NUC to remount the Faculty of Dentistry in line with the yearnings and aspirations of young Deltans and students from neighbouring states”.
Egwunyenga, who prides himself in inspirational leadership, encouraged the new students to be diligent in their studies and refrain from activities that are inimical to the advancement of intellectualism.
“As students, you should comport yourself very well, observe the rules and regulations of this University and refrain from activities which are inimical to the growth of intellectualism.
“I, therefore, urge everyone of you to shun all forms of vices.
“For the avoidance of doubt, cultism on campuses of this University is banned and remains banned.
“Anyone student found to belong to any secret cult group will be shown the way out of this University.”
Some parents and students who spoke with DELSU Echo congratulated the students and advised them to pursue their dreams with the required vigour.
