DELSU Campus Bubbles As SUG Holds Multiple Fun Events

By Akpeh Dinah

It was a weekend full of excitement, learning, and fun activities at the Site 2 of Delta State University, Abraka, as students gathered for two major events organised by the Students’ Union Government (SUG).

The events were the Light-Up DELSU seminar and the Food War cooking competition, both of which brought students together and created lasting memories.

The first event, Light-Up DELSU, was held on Friday, May 9th, 2025, at the SUG stand close to Ethiope Hall.

The event kicked off in the afternoon and was well attended by students from various departments and levels. The main speaker at the event was the SUG President, Comr. Augustine Onovughegor who encouraged students to “light up” the university-not with electricity but with positive character, good behaviour, strong morals, and academic excellence.

Onovughegor passionately admonished the students to be role models within and outside the school, reminding the students that they represent the university and their actions speak louder than words.

He motivated students to be serious with their studies, to avoid cultism, and to live in peace with one another.

To make the event livelier, there were several free giveaways, and students who answered questions correctly or participated in short games received items such as notebooks, pens, snacks, and recharge cards.

Everyone was visibly excited and cheered each other on. The seminar ended at around 6:30 p.m., and many students said they left feeling inspired and encouraged.

Fun, More Fun

The fun didn’t stop there. On Saturday, May 10th, the SUG hosted the Food War competition, also at the Site 2 SUG stand.

The event started at 9 a.m. and had the whole area buzzing with the smell of delicious food and the sound of students cheering for their favourite contestants.

A total of 25 students participated in the cooking contest, each preparing different meals that showed off their creativity and cooking skills.

The atmosphere was lively as students and guests moved from table to table to see what the contestants were making. There was everything from jollof rice to soups, pasta, and traditional dishes.

After the judges tasted all the food and scored each dish based on taste, presentation, and creativity, one contestant emerged as the winner, and received a cash prize of N50,000.

When I interviewed her, she said, “I’m so happy and excited. I didn’t expect to win, but I’m grateful. Cooking is something I love, and this means a lot to me.”

Many students praised the SUG for organising such fun and engaging activities, especially during a time when academic stress can be high.

They said events like these help them relax, socialise, and feel more connected to campus life.
