Stakeholders Brainstorm As Growing Apathy Threatens COMMESSA Freshers’ Party

Alarmed by the disappointing level of interest in the forthcoming freshers’ welcome party, the executive council of the Communication and Media Studies Student’s’ Association (COMMESSA) has held an urgent meeting with members of the association to tackle the growing problem.

Freshers’ party is an annual social event held in the second semester of every session to welcome new students, but the organisers seem to be facing a disappointing turnout this year as students fail to apply and participate in the activities.

This development sparked concern among the party organisers who promptly called an all-hands-on-deck meeting with the students to address the imbroglio.

At the meeting held on Tuesday, May 13, students expressed their concerns and reasons for the lack of participation.
Some harped on the complexity of the proposed gaming activities, while others focused on the demands of beauty pageantry, which is widely considered the highlight in of the event.
One of the freshmen, Igwe Abraham, said he was mostly discouraged by the unbearable financial requirements for pageantry, noting that the cost outweigh the benefits.
Victoria Nnenna, a first-year student, also expressed concern over the relatively poor prizes that winners might go home with, despite the voting criteria that required a good number of monetary values.
”There is nothing to gain after putting in time and effort,” said Nnenna.
Aaron Oghenegweke also expressed similar sentiments: “I won’t invest in something when I know I can’t gain from it. After spending a lot, I expect to win something, even if I’m not the winner, but in this case, there are no prizes, even for winners!”
Responding, the association’s Director of Socials, Comr. Esther Emotimi clarified that it was not mandatory for students to get new outfits as their corporate wear and fashionable outfits could be styled differently.
Emotimi also observed that for the games, the organising committee would implement the ones based on students’ interests and capacity, adding that there would be potential benefits for participation and effort, like endorsements and surprise monetary gifts from special guests and hosts.
On her part, COMMESA Staff Adviser, Mrs Joyce Agbaka asked if the students would be okay if they were allowed to wear their available outfits and design them creatively to suit a pageant, and in the end, everyone goes home with a prize.
The freshers shouted “yes” in unison.
By the end, the freshmen and the party organizers came to an amicable conclusion, and more people were interested in participating in the event
