Abraka Customary Court Goes On 2-Weeks Recess

By Stephanie Igbinosa

The Customary Court in Abraka, Delta State, has suspended its court sittings for a period of two weeks as part of its routine recess.

A visit to the customary court at Urhuovie community, Abraka on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025 revealed an empty courtroom and a temporary pause in court activities, with few staff seen around the court premises.

A staff member, who preferred not to be named, told our Reporter that there would be no court sittings for the two weeks period but declined to state the reasons for the suspension.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concern over the suspension.

“I came here to resolve a theft issue, but I was told to come back after two weeks. It’s frustrating because we don’t have the time or money to go to the High Court,” he said.

Another court staff member, Mr Egwonor Atigari, mentioned that the court operates three times a week and it is one of the major court around that handles minor cases specifically.

“We handle only minor cases in this court, cases like theft, rent,, family disagreement, divorce cases especially traditional marriages and few major cases like land matters; we’ve concluded some but the judgment have been difficult and rulings hard to make” Atigari explained.

He further observed that major cases, such as the dissolution of statutory (white) marriages and more complex land disputes, are referred to the High Court, adding that some land cases can take up to five years to resolve, during which the presiding judge might be replaced.

He also said the customary court does not normally handle criminal matters, noting that such cases are usually handled by the Magistrate or High court.

Atigari also mentioned that the court is facing several challenges.

According to him, Abraka Customary Court plays a vital role in resolving community issues at the grassroots level but often works with limited resources and manpower.

Thus, the judicial worker suggested that increased government funding, better staffing, and regular maintenance of court facilities would go a long way in improving the efficiency of customary courts.
