Suicide, Hard Drugs Not Solution To Stress, DELSU VC Tells Freshmen

The Vice-Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga, has advised newly admitted students of the university to shun all suicide-related thoughts and avoid the consumption of hard drugs when faced with stress.
Egwunyenga also charged the students to consider life as a gift that must be lived to the pleasure of the giver (God), adding that they will be held accountable for the lives they lead as individuals.
The Vice-Chancellor gave the advice during the 2023/2024 orientation exercise for new diploma students held today at Site 3 of the university’s Abraka campus.
“The life you have is not your own, you will account for it later. So, don’t waste it, don’t destroy it”, observed the Vice-Chancellor.
“Suicide is not a solution to stress, hard drug is also not a solution. Make God your shepherd; he will guide you, help you and see you through your stay in the University”.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Rosemary Okoh, the Vice-Chancellor noted that DELSU places a high premium on its orientation programme because it helps newly admitted students to integrate themselves into the university system.
“DELSU has privileges, norms, rules and regulations, and the orientation programme will provide you with the needed opportunity to learn about them and brace yourselves to face the challenges associated with the new environment and status as University students.
“Your sojourn in the university is a journey that requires new skills to handle; you need to acquire life skills, such as self-awareness, empathy, communication skills, time management, problem-solving skills, decision-making, healthy interpersonal relationships and many more.”
The Professor of Parasitology and Public Health also advised the students to refrain from abusing the freedom that comes with campus life, urging them to shun any act capable of truncating their academic pursuits.
In a welcome address, the acting Director of the Centre for Continuing Education at DELSU, Dr. Callistar Obi disclosed that the diploma programme has grown tremendously over the years, recording an impressive increase in the number of admitted students.
Obi disclosed that the Centre has grown from the paltry 324 students it had as of April 2020 to over 2,000 students in the 2023/2024 academic session in both degree and diploma programmes.
In her vote of thanks, Miss Theodora Tete, a student of Political Science Department, praised the commitment of the university management towards the growth of the continuing education programme.
Tete commended the Egwunyenga-led administration for “raising the bar and rewriting the name of the university in shining inks”.
The radiant valedictorian also praised Obi for being a mother to all diploma students and “making DELSU a home away from home”.
Different resource persons took turns to address salient issues affecting diploma students in DELSU.
The event also afforded the new students ample opportunities to dance and unwind.
