DELSU To Extend School Fees, Course Reg Deadline- Sources

There are strong indications that the management of Delta State University, Abraka would extend the official deadline it earlier set for the payment of school fees and registration of courses for the 2023/2024 academic.
Reliable sources within the university told DELSU Echo that there are ongoing meetings to consider and approve the new date.
“A new date will be announced soon, hopefully later in the day”, disclosed a source who preferred anonymity.
DELSU Echo reports that there is a palpable apprehension among students of the University who are yet to pay their school fees and register their courses for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The growing fear is premised on the January 5, 2024 deadline formally set by the university authorities for students to meet such obligations.
The university had in a bulletin published on December 6, 2023 directed that students who fail to pay their school fees and register their courses on or before Friday, January 5, 2024 “will not be allowed to participate in any academic activity after the deadline.”
The said bulletin appeared to have conflicted another issued by the school’s Public Relations Unit on the same day.
The initial bulletin had stated that the actual deadline for school fees payment and course registration would be January 31, 2024, offering students and parents a convenient timeframe to raise the fees.
However, the joy was short-lived when a follow-up bulletin was swiftly issued by the same public relations unit to nullify the first date and set January 5, 2024 as the new deadline.
The unexpected change in the deadline and subsequent closure of the portal have set students on edge, with many of them appealing for an extension of the deadline and reopening of the online registration portal.
“Right now, the school environment is tensed and many students are on their toes, at least hoping and waiting for an official memo from the VC announcing an extension of the school fees payment and course registration deadline”, said a-300 level student who preferred not to be named.
Our investigation showed that across the various faculties of the university, many students have not been able to pay their fees and/or register their courses.
For instance, in the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, only about 66 300-level students of Anatomy and Cell Biology Department seem to have completed their online registration in a class of over 200.
The situation is not different in the Faculty of Sciences where only about 53 300-level students in the Department of Biochemistry have completed their online registration for the 2023/2024 academic session in a class of about 160.
The registration quota was also poor in the Department of Mass Communication, which is arguably the largest in the faculty of the Social Sciences, as only about 72 students seem to have completed their online registration in a level that has about 200 students.
Contacted, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs NAD Aboribor said the university authority was deliberating on the matter and will make its decision known soon.
“There is something on it in management’s meeting today”, said Aboribo on Tuesday morning.
Also, the Students’ Union Government President at DELSU, Comr. Jimson Mathias told DELSU Echo on Wednesday that the union was making plans to write a letter of appeal to the Vice-Chancellor on the matter.
