#EndBadGovernance: 10 Protesters Charged for Treason

Published

on

The Federal Government (FG) summoned 10 protesters before a Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing them of attempting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The protesters, who pleaded not guilty, were denied bail and remanded in prison pending their trial.

The charges brought by the Inspector General of Police alleged that the protesters committed treasonable offenses during their nationwide protests between July 29 and August 5, 2024.

The offenses included levying war against Nigeria, attempting to force their way into the seat of power, burning down police stations, and inciting the public against the government.

The prosecution claimed that the protesters, led by a 70-year-old British citizen, Andrew Martin Wynne, broke into the Abacha Army Barracks and called on the military to take over the government.

They also allegedly destroyed public properties, including police stations, a High Court complex, and National Communication Commission facilities.

The defense counsel argued that the protesters were exercising their constitutional rights and that the charges were baseless.

They applied for bail, citing authorities and assuring the court that the defendants would not jump bail or tamper with witnesses.

However, the prosecution objected to the bail requests, citing the gravity of the alleged offenses.

Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the defendants to be remanded in prison and adjourned the ruling on their bail applications until September 11.
