JUST IN: ASUU Threatens Strike, Gives FG 14-Day Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding urgent action on several unresolved issues affecting the higher education sector.

ASUU is calling for the finalization of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement from 2021.

Additionally, the union is pressing for the release of withheld salaries stemming from the 2022 strike.

In a statement released on Wednesday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke expressed deep frustration over the government’s apparent lack of commitment and ongoing delays.

He claims these issues are exacerbating the crisis in public universities.

“In light of these concerns, ASUU has decided to extend the previous 21-day ultimatum by an additional 14 days, starting from Monday, September 23, 2024,” Osodeke stated.

He emphasized that all outstanding issues must be addressed satisfactorily during this period.

The union warns that it will not be held accountable for any disruptions that may occur if the government fails to take this opportunity to resolve the impending crisis.

Key demands include the implementation of the 2021 agreement.

The release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) is also a priority.

ASUU is seeking payment of outstanding third-party deductions, such as check-off dues and cooperative contributions.

Increased funding for the revitalization of public universities, as outlined in the 2023 Federal Government Budget, is another critical demand.

The payment of Earned Academic Allowances, also referenced in the 2023 budget, is being sought as well.

Additionally, ASUU is highlighting concerns related to the proliferation of universities by both Federal and State Governments.

The union is calling for the implementation of visitation panel reports and the reversal of the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils.

Finally, ASUU advocates for the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution to replace the IPPIS.
