Kano Windstorm Kills 49, Submerges 226 Communities In Flood

The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that 49 people have lost their lives and 226 communities have been affected by flooding and windstorms in 27 Local Government Areas of the state since January 2024.
SEMA Executive Secretary, Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, disclosed this information during a press briefing in Kano.
He recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) had previously predicted a high risk of flooding in 14 local government areas of the state.
Unfortunately, the predictions proved accurate, as the flood and windstorm swept through the state, leaving widespread destruction in their path.
The affected areas include Tudun Wada, Gwale, Wudil, Danbatta, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, Madobi, Bichi, Kano Municipal, Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, Rogo, Shanono, Kabo, Garin Malam, and Ungogo, among others.

According to Abdullahi-Kubarachi, the flood destroyed 6,583 houses, affecting 38,814 people.
8,289 farmlands (equivalent to 36,265 hectares) was destroyed, displacing 1,414 people and injuring 139 others.
SEMA has responded promptly to the situation by visiting affected areas, distributing relief materials, and organizing workshops to address environmental hazards like flooding.
Abdullahi-Kubarachi commended Governor Abba Yusuf for providing necessary assistance, urged residents to clear drainage systems and avoid building on waterways.
He also appealed to wealthy individuals to support flood victims with relief materials.
The event, held at the Dr. Oluyomi Abayomi Finnih Park by Opebi Link Bridge, Lagos, sought to inspire kids to connect with and cherish the natural world while teaching them sustainable environmental practices.
