Stakeholders Warn Against Consequences Of Female Genital Mutilation

Published

on

Civil society advocates have reiterated the equal sexual rights of women with their male counterparts, saying that discriminatory sexual practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are evil, illegal and dangerous.

One of the advocates, Margaret Onah-Nnang, said the practice affects the normal functioning of the female sexual organ, thereby depriving women of sexual pleasures.

“Female genital mutilation is the ‘dis-functioning’ of the sexual organ of women”, stated Onah-Nnang at a media roundtable held in Lagos on Wednesday.

“Women have the right to have sexual pleasure just as men, yet they cut women to drive them from having many sexual partners.”

Therefore, she advised women, girls and communities to desist from indulging in female genital mutilation given its consequences.

Another advocate at the event, Mr Rasheed Awofeso, described FGM as a crime and abuse on the girl child.

Awofeso said that cutting the genital part of a woman was unlawful and against humanity.

He tasked the media on community sensitisation against the act by letting people know the health implications of its aftermath.

On his part, a community leader, Baale Makinde Adesola observed that the practice was not traditionally approved.

Adesola said it was also not medically advisable for someone to indulge in FGM due to its consequences for females.

I feel it’s ignorance that leads to FGM
OR they’re are not aware of the danger.

The FGM is an old act carried out on women depriving them of enjoying sexual intercourse and having little or no urge for sex, I see it to be inhumane and and out of place, it should be totally abolished. Matter of fact, Not all women survive the process.

I see no reasons why such act should be carried in this 21st century. It should be abolished, and heavily paid for when victimized.
